Fortuna Police Citizens Academy participants received their certificates of completion at a small ceremony, following their last section of training last night.

The Academy consisted of eight weeks of training, meeting for two hours each week. The training allowed citizens the opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of law enforcement in Fortuna.

The training is intended to help the average citizen become better informed about the inner workings of our police department, and to help them dispel some of the misunderstandings and myths that may exist about law enforcement in general.
They also got the opportunity to learn about some of the training that our police officers undergo.

Among some of the topics that they covered during the training are basic crime prevention techniques, what types of behaviors might be classified as “suspicious”, legal use of force, forensics and crime scene preservation, crime scene safety, police radio operations, what happens during an investigation and when is an arrest warrant issued, what is a lawful assembly, and recognizing behaviors that may indicate substance abuse.

They also learned situational awareness skills, how to be an accurate witness, why there are times that officers are unable to arrest suspects, how officer’s duties are guided by the State and US Constitution, and what constitutes a reportable crime.
The training also helps the average citizen become a more effective neighborhood watch member, and help them gain many of the basic skills needed to become a police department volunteer.

Out of an original class of 17 members, 14 were in attendance to receive their certificates which now qualifies them to apply to become volunteers with the Fortuna Police Department.

Anyone interested in attending the next Citizen Academy should contact Robin Paul at rpaul@ci.fortuna.ca.us, or calling 725-1423. They may also download the application by going to the following link: http://www.friendlyfortuna.com/documentcenter/view/2979
