Suspected PG&E Phone Scam Claiming Service Shut-Off Imminent

Fortuna Police Department received a call from a citizen reporting a scam involving someone posing as a PG&E representative.

The caller informed the victim that a PG&E representative was currently at their residence and was in the process of shutting off their service for non-payment.

The victim quickly accessed their account online and found that her account was paid and up to date.

However, the caller, who identified themselves as David and gave and employee ID # 71374 said that the person needed to “not go to the local PG&E office, but go directly to Rite-Aid to make the payment”.

The person receiving the call was shook up enough that they went to Rite Aid and the clerk said that they didn’t know anything about it.  It is unknown whether there was an accomplice that was waiting there for the victim.

The victim says that the phone call that she received originated from a number spoofing (faked) PG&E’s 800-743-5000 phone number, but gave the phone number to contact as 925-289-7373.

A phone number from where she received a subsequent text message came from 650-723-2200.

Please be aware that this is a scam and when in doubt you can call PG&E’s scam phone line at 1-833-500-7226.  Or, you can call to speak with someone at our department by calling 725-7550, option 0.
